DAVIE\u00a0(CBSMiami) \u2013 \u00a0The family of a decorated marine is saying Veterans Affairs (VA) doctors gave him powerful drugs that he used to take his own life.<\/p>\n

Twenty-four year old Marine Lance corporal Johnny Lutz first served in Iraq and then the front lines of Afghanistan.<\/p>\n

\u201cJohnny was the life of the party,\u201d said his mother\u00a0Janine Lutz.<\/p>\n

But war changed him. He committed suicide shortly after returning from serving.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor six months every minute you think you are gonna die and that changes your brain,\u201d said\u00a0Lutz.<\/p>\n

She said he didn\u2019t die on the battlefield but because of medical mistakes at the VA Hospital in Miami and clinic in Tamarac.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m angry and sad it was preventable,\u201d said Lutz.<\/p>\n

Lutz said powerful medicine was given to her son for post-traumatic stress disorder even after he told them it made him suicidal. She said they upped the dosage and he took his own life.<\/p>\n

\u201cMultiple doctors knew and my sons life wasn\u2019t of value,\u201d said Lutz.<\/p>\n

She said she intends to sue\u00a0for the wrongful death of her son.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you ask any doctor at the VA, they will tell you they are not happy with the system but they need the resources from Congress,\u201d said attorney\u00a0John Uustal.<\/p>\n

Veterans Administration spokesman Shane Suzuki released a statement Thursday, saying, \u201cWhile our thoughts go out to the friends and family of Mr. Lutz, we cannot comment on pending litigation\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Now Janine Lutz is trying to help other veterans dealing with the demons of war. She has started a foundation in her child\u2019s name, buddying up veterans with others who have walked in their shoes.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know I\u2019m saving lives and that makes me feel good,\u201d said Lutz.<\/p>\n
