New York Police Department Officer Michael Caddy served his department for six years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Staten Island, NY \u2013 New York Police Department (NYPD) Officer Michael Caddy died by suicide on June 14.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The 29-year-old off-duty officer\u2019s body was discovered inside a car on Wilcox Street near the 121st Precinct at approximately 3:45 p.m. by another off-duty officer, the\u00a0New York Daily News<\/a>\u00a0reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, police said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Officer Caddy was in the midst of divorce proceedings at the time of his death, according to his attorney, Brian Perskin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cHe was getting divorced, so he wasn\u2019t happy,\u201d Perskin said. \u201cHe was pretty stressed out. But this is totally unexpected. I feel bad for the wife, and especially his father, who he was very close to.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The attorney said that the divorce has been relatively \u201cnon-eventful,\u201d and that Officer Caddy and his wife \u201cwanted to do the right thing by each other.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Officer Caddy, a six-year veteran-of-the-force, was assigned to the NYPD\u2019s 121st Precinct, where he worked on domestic violence cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He also served as a youth instructor for the Too Good for Drugs program during his time with the department,\u00a0Staten Island Live<\/a>\u00a0reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Officer Caddy leaves behind his wife and two children, as well as his parents, sister, niece, and nephews, according to his obituary<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAbove all, Michael found joy as a father,\u201d his obituary read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Approximately two dozen police vehicles and over 100 NYPD officers closed of a section of Dongan Hills during Officer Caddy\u2019s funeral procession on Wednesday, Staten Island Live<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Officer Caddy\u2019s death was the third NYPD suicide in a period of just nine days, according to Staten Island Live<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cCops spend so much of their days assisting others…but before we can help the people we serve, it is imperative that we first help ourselves,\u201d NYPD Commissioner James O\u2019Neill said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of New York Police Department Officer Michael Caddy, both blood and blue.
