Queens, NY \u2013 New York Police Department (NYPD) Sergeant Linhong Li died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his home on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The 33-year-old sergeant\u2019s wife found him suffering from a gunshot wound inside their Fresh Meadows residence at approximately 9:30 p.m., the New York Daily News<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n

\u201cOut of nowhere, maybe 30 cops stopped by,\u201d the couple\u2019s neighbor, Fabio Acquista, told the New York Post<\/a>. \u201cThen I just heard them shouting, \u2018Bring him to the bus!\u2019 The ambulance was just pulling up and they brought him inside [it].\u201d<\/p>\n

Acquista estimated that first responders tried to resuscitate the sergeant for 15 or 20 minutes.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou could see them pumping his chest,\u201d the neighbor recalled. \u201cI saw the wife. She was screaming at the door.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sgt. Li was rushed to Jamaica Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the New York Daily News reported.<\/p>\n

He was the 10th NYPD officer to die by suicide this year.<\/p>\n

\u201cTragically, we have lost another NYPD member to suicide,\u201d New York Police Commissioner James O\u2019Neill tweeted<\/a> on Wednesday. \u201cWe\u2019re taking great steps to end this mental-health crisis, and we vow to always keep fighting. Please take care of yourselves and regularly check up on your colleagues and loved ones. #StopSuicide.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to police sources, Sgt. Li had been in contact with the department\u2019s Early Intervention Unit sometime prior to his death, the New York Post reported.<\/p>\n

Sgt. Li, a U.S. Marine who served in Iraq, graduated at the very top of his NYPD academy class, Newsday<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n

The seven-year veteran-of-the-force was assigned to the NYPD\u2019s 24th Precinct in upper Manhattan at the time of his death, according to the New York Post.<\/p>\n

\u201cOfficer Li will be remembered as a dedicated public servant and his passing is a great loss for the Borough of Queens and New York City, New York Assemblyman David Weprin said in a statement<\/a>. \u201cOur police officers face multiple stresses and traumas on the job each day while protecting us and I urge our officers to seek assistance when necessary and take advantage of the NYPD\u2019s mental health services.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy heartfelt condolences go out to his wife and family at this difficult time,\u201d Weprin said.<\/p>\n

Sgt. Li will be laid to rest on Oct. 24, according to the Sergeants Benevolent Association.<\/p>\n
