Not only was the tumor eating away at her facial bone structure, it was causing immense pain and triggering seizures. As a result, doctors were eager to get her into surgery.<\/p>\n<p>Though Rylie\u2019s parents were stunned by the development, they went along with the hospital\u2019s recommendations and dove into research of their own. Shortly after meeting with a group of mothers who also had sick children, Rylie\u2019s mom, Janie, learned that some families were using components of the cannabis plant \u2014 specifically, THC, CBD, and THCA \u2014 to heal their children. At the time, THC and THCA were illegal for medicinal purposes in the state of Delaware.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-20715 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/themindunleashed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Rylie-Maedler-Tackles-Cancer-10.jpeg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px\" srcset=\"http:\/\/themindunleashed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Rylie-Maedler-Tackles-Cancer-10.jpeg 730w, http:\/\/themindunleashed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Rylie-Maedler-Tackles-Cancer-10-300x164.jpeg 300w\" alt=\"\" width=\"730\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After extensive research, the Maedler family learned that components of cannabis \u2014 primarily cannabidiol (or CBD oil) \u2014 have been proven in dozens of studies to benefit a range of conditions. Because there are over<a href=\"http:\/\/www.trueactivist.com\/there-are-now-100-scientific-studies-proving-cannabis-cures-cancer\/\">\u00a0100 peer-reviewed studies proving CBD oil \u201ccures\u201d cancer<\/a>and<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/marijuana-deaths-2014_us_56816417e4b06fa68880a217\">\u00a00 people have died<\/a>\u00a0from using it in the thousands of years it has been available, Rylie\u2019s parents decided to introduce it as a therapy.<\/p>\n<p>One month to the day after Rylie\u2019s surgery, the 7-year-old\u2019s parents began giving her cannabis oil in secret. Said Janie,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWhen I went into this, having all this knowledge about what cannabis could do, it was [\u2026] a no-brainer to me.\u201d Before long, Rylie noted a reduction in pain and inflammation, and tumor shrinkage was evident.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_20718\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20718\" src=\"http:\/\/themindunleashed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Rylie-Maedler-Tackles-Cancer-3.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px\" srcset=\"http:\/\/themindunleashed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Rylie-Maedler-Tackles-Cancer-3.jpg 640w, http:\/\/themindunleashed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Rylie-Maedler-Tackles-Cancer-3-300x225.jpg 300w\" alt=\"\" width=\"730\" height=\"548\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: Rylie Smiles Foundation<\/p>\n<p>Because cannabis oil was illegal, the doctors didn\u2019t know about the supplementation. However, they repeatedly commented on Rylie\u2019s quick facial regeneration over the months. \u201cThere were a lot of questions \u2014 even when we went to John Hopkins,\u201d said Janie. \u201cThey said, \u2018This is very hard to believe that the child I am reading about in these records is that child sitting in front of me.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One year later, the young girl\u2019s parents finally explained the \u201cmagic\u201d medicine that had been helping her get better. As a third-grader, Rylie didn\u2019t understand why the other children couldn\u2019t have her life-saving tincture. However, she kept an optimistic spirit and, at the age of 9, founded the nonprofit\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ryliessmilefoundation.org\/\">Rylie\u2019s Smile Foundation<\/a>. The 501(c)3 gives free iPods to sick children. She single-handedly fought for Delaware to have a Pediatric Medical Marijuana law which was later passed and named Rylie\u2019s Law. Janie then went on to fight for Delaware\u2019s Pediatric Medical card holders to be allowed their cannabis oil on school property. Rylie\u2019s Law and SB181 \u2014 the \u201camendment\u201d to Rylie\u2019s Law \u2014 were both passed by unanimous votes through all Health Committees, the Senate, and the House.<\/p>\n<p>Now that Rylie is legally allowed to continue taking cannabis oil \u2014 and on school grounds, no less, she and her family continue to advocate for the use of marijuana as a medicine. At present, the Maedlers are pushing for autism to be added to the list of afflictions permissible to be treated with the natural herb.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-20726\" src=\"http:\/\/themindunleashed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/rylie-tackles-cancer-12.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px\" srcset=\"http:\/\/themindunleashed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/rylie-tackles-cancer-12.jpg 730w, http:\/\/themindunleashed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/rylie-tackles-cancer-12-300x164.jpg 300w\" alt=\"\" width=\"730\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>According to Janie, Rylie is one of five children worldwide to have developed the incredibly rare tumor that mimics cancer. And, she is the only one who has not shown signs of regression. The family credits this to cannabis oil, which is why they seek for the herb to be decriminalized nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after Rylie\u2019s diagnosis, the Maedlers partnered with<a href=\"https:\/\/originalnectarblog.wordpress.com\/\">\u00a0Original Nectar<\/a>\u00a0to create a strain specifically for the young girl. Barry Herzberg, the founder and co-owner of the California-based company, said via email: \u201cI was asked if I would be willing to help Janie with language and expertise regarding extraction for assistance in changing\/writing local law. I agreed and we became friends after many long conversations.
