By 2015, that number had skyrocketed to 43 percent.<\/p>\n<p>The message has grown louder as the legalization of marijuana takes effect at the beginning of 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Officials say the percentage of drivers in fatal crashes who have other impairing substances in their system, has risen 38.7 percent since 2006.<\/p>\n<p>Prescription medications such as sleep aids and pain killers can leave drivers impaired.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Just like drunk driving, driving under the influence of drugs is not only dangerous, it is a crime,&#8221; CHP Acting Commissioner Warren Stanley said. &#8220;What caused the impairment does not matter.
