Cannabis has also shown encouraging signs as a treatment for various medical conditions and ailments, which should make the space of interest to investors in biotech and healthcare.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p p1\">While cannabis remains federally illegal in the United States and publicly-traded cannabis companies are located overseas, I believe that investors should pay close attention to this emerging industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p p1\">In this article, I&#8217;ll provide an overview of the cannabis industry and describe what investors should be looking out for. I&#8217;ll also begin to write articles that evaluate specific companies in the space.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p p1\">I would also like to preface this article by encouraging readers to avoid conflating their personal opinion of cannabis with their evaluation of the cannabis industry as an investment opportunity. I was raised in Southern California and now attend college in upstate New York, and have witnessed firsthand how attitudes towards cannabis differ significantly based on locale.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p p1\">Overview Of The Cannabis Industry<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p p1\">The cannabis industry continues to expand at a rapid pace. Americans spent $6.7 billion on recreational and medical cannabis in 2016, a surprisingly large number given that marijuana is illegal in wide swaths of the United States. The west coast is the most liberal when it comes to cannabis, whereas areas of the Midwest appear less so. However, it is interesting to note that support for legalization has gradually increased over the past several decades, and\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/wonk\/wp\/2017\/10\/25\/for-the-first-time-a-majority-of-republicans-support-marijuana-legalization\/?utm_term=.f247a01ba22f\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/wonk\/wp\/2017\/10\/25\/for-the-first-time-a-majority-of-republicans-support-marijuana-legalization\/?utm_term=.f247a01ba22f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">64 percent of Americans as a whole<\/a>\u00a0now support legalization:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p p2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/static.seekingalpha.com\/uploads\/2017\/12\/25\/47339170-15142587809723363_origin.png\" rel=\"lightbox\" data-width=\"1220\" data-height=\"878\" data-og-image-twitter_small_card=\"true\" data-og-image-twitter_large_card=\"true\" data-og-image-twitter_image_post=\"true\" data-og-image-msn=\"true\" data-og-image-facebook=\"true\" data-og-image-google_news=\"true\" data-og-image-google_plus=\"true\" data-og-image-linkdin=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.seekingalpha.com\/uploads\/2017\/12\/25\/47339170-15142587809723363.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"461\" data-width=\"640\" data-height=\"461\" data-og-image-twitter_small_card=\"true\" data-og-image-twitter_large_card=\"true\" data-og-image-twitter_image_post=\"true\" data-og-image-msn=\"true\" data-og-image-facebook=\"true\" data-og-image-google_news=\"true\" data-og-image-google_plus=\"true\" data-og-image-linkdin=\"true\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p p2\">Cannabis is\u00a0<a title=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2017\/12\/02\/news\/canada-cannabis\/index.html\" href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2017\/12\/02\/news\/canada-cannabis\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">expected to be legalized nationally in Canada<\/a>\u00a0by summer of 2018, with widespread support from Canadian citizens and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau This means that the future of cannabis in the US is likely contingent on the effects of legalization in Canada, as Canada will likely be used as a barometer by our politicians to assess the effects of recreational marijuana.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p p2\">Despite the sharp divides in support for cannabis legalization, a few things are clear: public support for marijuana legalization continues to increase, the industry is already a multibillion-dollar juggernaut that looks primed for continued expansion, and there are clear potential medical benefits of cannabis.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p p2\">Medical Benefits Of Cannabis<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p p3\"><a title=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2014\/03\/07\/health\/gallery\/uses-for-medical-marijuana\/index.html\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2014\/03\/07\/health\/gallery\/uses-for-medical-marijuana\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Cannabis has demonstrated usefulness<\/a>\u00a0in the treatment of epileptic seizures, glaucoma, and multiple sclerosis; it is also used as an appetite stimulant for cancer patients, as a source of pain relief, and as a treatment for nausea and other conditions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p p3\"><a title=\"http:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/medical-marijuana-cbd-not-addictive-toxic-who-says-748069\" href=\"http:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/medical-marijuana-cbd-not-addictive-toxic-who-says-748069\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">The World Health Organization<\/a>\u00a0recently released a report declaring that &#8220;CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential&#8221;. CBD is the main ingredient in medical marijuana.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p p3\"><a title=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2015\/04\/16\/opinions\/medical-marijuana-revolution-sanjay-gupta\/index.html\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2015\/04\/16\/opinions\/medical-marijuana-revolution-sanjay-gupta\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">This article<\/a>\u00a0by CNN&#8217;s chief medical correspondent Sanjay Gupta outlines the benefits of medical marijuana and describes several clinical studies that have shown promising results. Former\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2015\/02\/04\/vivek-murthy-marijuana_n_6614226.html\" href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2015\/02\/04\/vivek-murthy-marijuana_n_6614226.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Surgeon General Vivek Murthy<\/a>\u00a0has also noted that \u201cwe have some preliminary data that for certain medical conditions and symptoms, marijuana can be helpful&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p p3\">Cannabis is also a potential solution to the\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/opioids\/about-the-epidemic\/index.html\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/opioids\/about-the-epidemic\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">opiod epidemic<\/a>\u00a0that has gripped our country. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, over 90 Americans die every day from opioid abuse. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.drugabuse.gov\/drugs-abuse\/opioids\/opioid-overdose-crisis\" href=\"https:\/\/www.drugabuse.gov\/drugs-abuse\/opioids\/opioid-overdose-crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">estimates that the total &#8220;economic burden&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0of prescription opioid misuse alone in the United States is $78.5 billion a year, including the costs of healthcare, lost productivity, addiction treatment, and criminal justice involvement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p p3\">Cannabis-based medicine has been proposed as an alternative to opioids, and studies show that marijuana legalization has been associated with a\u00a0<a title=\"http:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/legalizing-cannabis-opioid-deaths-how-marijuana-saving-lives-colorado-686949\" href=\"http:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/legalizing-cannabis-opioid-deaths-how-marijuana-saving-lives-colorado-686949\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">decline in deaths from opioid overdoses<\/a>\u00a0in Colorado. Although a controversial proposition,\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.drugabuse.gov\/about-nida\/legislative-activities\/testimony-to-congress\/2016\/americas-addiction-to-opioids-heroin-prescription-drug-abuse\" href=\"https:\/\/www.drugabuse.gov\/about-nida\/legislative-activities\/testimony-to-congress\/2016\/americas-addiction-to-opioids-heroin-prescription-drug-abuse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">proponents argue that cannabis is preferable<\/a>\u00a0to opioids given that it is much less harmful and addictive.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p p3\">GW Pharmaceuticals<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p p3\">Several companies are already working on developing cannabinoid-based drugs that will be used to treat various ailments. For example, UK-based GW Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:<a class=\"ticker-link\" href=\"https:\/\/seekingalpha.com\/symbol\/GWPH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0GWPH<\/a>) is currently in the process of manufacturing a drug called Epidolex that is used in the treatment of several forms of epilepsy that occurs early in childhood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p p3\"><a title=\"https:\/\/www.gwpharm.com\/products-pipeline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gwpharm.com\/products-pipeline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">The company has completed Phase 3 clinical research<\/a>\u00a0for the drug and has submitted an NDA (New Drug Application) to the FDA, with results expected sometime in 2018. They also have several commercially-available and development-stage products, including Sativex, a drug for multiple sclerosis spasticity that has earned regulatory approval in 30 countries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p p4\">GWPH&#8217;s product pipeline shows how cannabinoid-based products have significant potential as a treatment for a wide range of diseases:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p p4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/static.seekingalpha.com\/uploads\/2017\/12\/26\/47339170-1514316626543941_origin.png\" rel=\"lightbox\" data-width=\"1250\" data-height=\"1284\" data-og-image-twitter_small_card=\"true\" data-og-image-twitter_large_card=\"true\" data-og-image-twitter_image_post=\"true\" data-og-image-msn=\"true\" data-og-image-facebook=\"true\" data-og-image-google_news=\"true\" data-og-image-google_plus=\"true\" data-og-image-linkdin=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.seekingalpha.com\/uploads\/2017\/12\/26\/47339170-1514316626543941.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"657\" data-width=\"640\" data-height=\"657\" data-og-image-twitter_small_card=\"true\" data-og-image-twitter_large_card=\"true\" data-og-image-twitter_image_post=\"true\" data-og-image-msn=\"true\" data-og-image-facebook=\"true\" data-og-image-google_news=\"true\" data-og-image-google_plus=\"true\" data-og-image-linkdin=\"true\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p p4\">(Source:\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.gwpharm.com\/products-pipeline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gwpharm.com\/products-pipeline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">GWPharm.com<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p p4\">GW Pharmaceuticals is still an early-stage company with significant risk, given that it has a\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/GWPH?p=GWPH\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/GWPH?p=GWPH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">market capitalization of $3.8 billion<\/a>\u00a0with little revenue and recently announced a\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/seekingalpha.com\/pr\/17019164-gw-pharmaceuticals-announces-proposed-public-offering-adss\" href=\"https:\/\/seekingalpha.com\/pr\/17019164-gw-pharmaceuticals-announces-proposed-public-offering-adss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">$225M round of funding<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p p4\">However, the company&#8217;s valuation and progress demonstrate that cannabis has significant potential for a variety of medical conditions, which may have implications for the pharma, biotech, and healthcare industries.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p p4\">Canopy Growth Corporation<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p p4\"><a title=\"https:\/\/www.canopygrowth.com\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canopygrowth.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Canopy Growth Corp.<\/a>, mentioned earlier, is a Canadian medical marijuana company that holds a diverse assortment of cannabis brands and products. It has a\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/stock\/twmjf\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/stock\/twmjf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">market capitalization of $3.5 billion<\/a>\u00a0and has appreciated substantially as nationwide legalization in Canada grows closer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p p4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/static.seekingalpha.com\/uploads\/2017\/12\/26\/47339170-15143176874262455_origin.png\" rel=\"lightbox\" data-width=\"1656\" data-height=\"466\" data-og-image-twitter_small_card=\"false\" data-og-image-twitter_large_card=\"false\" data-og-image-twitter_image_post=\"false\" data-og-image-msn=\"false\" data-og-image-facebook=\"false\" data-og-image-google_news=\"false\" data-og-image-google_plus=\"false\" data-og-image-linkdin=\"false\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.seekingalpha.com\/uploads\/2017\/12\/26\/47339170-15143176874262455.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"180\" data-width=\"640\" data-height=\"180\" data-og-image-twitter_small_card=\"false\" data-og-image-twitter_large_card=\"false\" data-og-image-twitter_image_post=\"false\" data-og-image-msn=\"false\" data-og-image-facebook=\"false\" data-og-image-google_news=\"false\" data-og-image-google_plus=\"false\" data-og-image-linkdin=\"false\" \/><\/a>(Source: YCharts)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p p4\"><a title=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0994\/1238\/files\/170626_CGC_FY17_Financial_Statements_FINAL.pdf?6176152254755414723\" href=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0994\/1238\/files\/170626_CGC_FY17_Financial_Statements_FINAL.pdf?6176152254755414723\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">The company reported sales of $31.4 million<\/a>\u00a0for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2017 and a net loss of $13.4 million for the same time period.\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/seekingalpha.com\/article\/4060736-canopy-growth-2-big-reasons-avoid\" href=\"https:\/\/seekingalpha.com\/article\/4060736-canopy-growth-2-big-reasons-avoid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Contributors have expressed concern<\/a>\u00a0about Canopy&#8217;s expensive valuation, noting that the company&#8217;s price-sales multiple is extremely high and the company has yet to turn a profit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p p4\">Canopy Growth is clearly a high risk-play but investors are clearly interested in the company as it looks to become a major player in the\u00a0<a title=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2017\/12\/02\/news\/canada-cannabis\/index.html\" href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2017\/12\/02\/news\/canada-cannabis\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Canada&#8217;s emerging cannabis economy<\/a>. Its valuation arguably reflects the company&#8217;s first-mover advantage in what is likely to become one of the largest recreational marijuana markets in the world. Constellation Brands, recognizing its potential,\u00a0<a title=\"http:\/\/fortune.com\/2017\/10\/30\/constellation-brands-cannabis-canopy-growth\/\" href=\"http:\/\/fortune.com\/2017\/10\/30\/constellation-brands-cannabis-canopy-growth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">purchased a 9.9% stake in the company for roughly $191 million.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p p5\">This news made headlines as Constellation Brands is a large, reputable company with a\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/stock\/stz\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/stock\/stz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">market cap of $43 billion<\/a>, demonstrating that interest in cannabis is becoming mainstream. The company is well-known as the producer of Corona beer and Svedka vodka.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p p5\">Canopy Growth Corporation and GW Pharmaceuticals are two of the largest players in the cannabis space. Investors should keep an eye on these two companies as they represent two of the biggest (by market capitalization) and most mature players in the industry. I will have more to say on these companies in future articles.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p p5\">Political Climate<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p p5\">The future of cannabis is dependent on whether or not its status as a federally illegal Schedule I substance changes in the future. The Obama administration took a hands-off approach to marijuana:\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.biotrack.com\/cole-memo\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biotrack.com\/cole-memo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">the Cole Memo<\/a>, issued by then Attorney General James Cole, provided guidelines for states to follow to ensure that the federal government would not prosecute or interfere with cannabis-related activities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p p5\"><a title=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/regulation\/administration\/343218-trumps-doj-gears-up-for-crackdown-on-marijuana\" href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/regulation\/administration\/343218-trumps-doj-gears-up-for-crackdown-on-marijuana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">The Trump administration<\/a>\u00a0has remained rather ambivalent when it comes to cannabis, although Attorney General Jeff Sessions has been a staunch opponent of legalization. Trump&#8217;s election cast a bit of a dark cloud over the nascent cannabis industry; however, growing public support for marijuana legalization is a positive sign that the federal government will avoid interfering in the industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p p5\">The future of the industry in the short-term may be difficult to assess, but several trends indicate that the cannabis industry will flourish in the long-term.\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2017\/10\/25\/poll-americans-support-marijuana-legalization-244155\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2017\/10\/25\/poll-americans-support-marijuana-legalization-244155\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Public and municipal support for legalization<\/a>\u00a0continues to increase steadily, a growing body of scientific research shows the positive medical effects of cannabis; and there is little evidence to suggest that marijuana is\u00a0<a title=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/alcohol-marijuana-which-worse-health-2017-11\" href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/alcohol-marijuana-which-worse-health-2017-11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">more harmful to one&#8217;s health than tobacco or alcohol.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p p5\">That isn&#8217;t to say that cannabis doesn&#8217;t have any negative effects, and\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/886318\/an-analysis-of-10000-scientific-studies-on-marijuana-concretely-supports-only-three-medical-benefits\/\" href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/886318\/an-analysis-of-10000-scientific-studies-on-marijuana-concretely-supports-only-three-medical-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">this article<\/a>\u00a0describes some of the negative effects of consumption. However,\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/tobacco\/data_statistics\/fact_sheets\/tobacco_industry\/marketing\/index.htm\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/tobacco\/data_statistics\/fact_sheets\/tobacco_industry\/marketing\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">tobacco is a perfect example<\/a>\u00a0of how a substance with some negative health effects can be widely legalized and commercialized.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p p6\">Effects Of Legalization<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p p6\"><a title=\"http:\/\/www.drugpolicy.org\/news\/2016\/10\/so-far-so-good-what-we-know-about-marijuana-legalization-colorado-washington-alaska-ore\" href=\"http:\/\/www.drugpolicy.org\/news\/2016\/10\/so-far-so-good-what-we-know-about-marijuana-legalization-colorado-washington-alaska-ore\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">The Drug Policy Alliance recently released a report<\/a>\u00a0in which it examined the effects of marijuana legalization in Colorado, Washington, Oregon, and other states. Titled \u201cSo Far, So Good\u201d, the report\u2019s main findings are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"p p6\">\n<li>Legalization has not led to more dangerous road conditions, as traffic fatality rates have remained stable in the states studied.<\/li>\n<li>Tax revenues in Colorado, Washington, and Oregon have all exceeded initial revenue estimates, totaling $552 million.<\/li>\n<li>Marijuana-related arrests have plummeted in all states in which legalization has been enacted.<\/li>\n<li>There has not been a significant increase in teen marijuana use.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p p6\">The report was largely positive and a boon for cannabis advocates who have argued that legalization will not have adverse effects for states or local economies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p p6\">However, investors must closely monitor the effects of cannabis legalization in order to gauge the future of the industry and the possibility of federal legalization in coming years.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p p6\">Risks<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p p6\">There are several notable risks and pitfalls of investing in the cannabis industry, which are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"p p6\">\n<li>As cannabis is still a federally illegal substance, opportunities to invest in legitimate, publicly-traded cannabis companies remain sparse.<\/li>\n<li>The industry is subject to enforcement and crackdowns by federal authorities since cannabis is still<a title=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/druginfo\/ds.shtml\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/druginfo\/ds.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0a controlled, Schedule I drug.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Research on cannabis&#8217;s effects on memory and health is still ongoing and may result in unfavorable findings, thus posing an existential risk to the emerging cannabis industry.<\/li>\n<li>Public support for marijuana legalization may eventually subside, which also threatens the viability of the industry and related companies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p p6\">The cannabis industry as an investment opportunity remains fraught with risk and uncertainty. The substance is still clouded by stigma and some remain\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/calmusa.org\" href=\"https:\/\/calmusa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">staunchly opposed to legalization<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p p6\">Conclusion<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p p6\">The cannabis industry is still in its infancy but continues to grow at a rapid pace.
