A Texas child can now treat a rare form of epilepsy with medical cannabis oil.<\/p>\n

A 6-year-old girl became a customer of a medical marijuana delivery in Texas last week, making her the first person in Texas to legally receive cannabis for medical purposes, reports\u00a0the Austin American-Statesman<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Texas\u2019 first medical marijuana transaction came two years after Republican Gov. Greg Abbott signed a law legalizing sales of cannabis oils containing low levels of the psychoactive element THC and high levels of the therapeutic compound CBD.<\/p>\n

A total of three dispensaries were authorized by the Texas Department of Public Safety to grow and distribute products in late 2017, including the shop that made the delivery, Knox Medical.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor Texans suffering from intractable epilepsy, the wait for medical cannabis is finally over,\u201d said Jos\u00e9 Hidalgo, the founder and CEO of Knox Medical, to the\u00a0Texas Tribune<\/em><\/a>. \u201cThis is a historic day for Texas and we will work tirelessly to uphold the trust and responsibility the state has placed in Knox Medical.\u201d<\/p>\n

Several studies<\/a>\u00a0involving a form of\u00a0CBD medication<\/a>\u00a0created by GW Pharmaceuticals have proven the drug to\u00a0effectively treat<\/a>\u00a0rare forms of epilepsy.<\/p>\n

The medical program could possibly help a remarkable amount of people, as the Epilepsy Foundation Texas estimates roughly 150,000 Texans suffering from intractable epilepsy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
