Doctors use \u2018inflammatory bowel disease\u2019 as an umbrella term for inflammatory bowel conditions such as Chron\u2019s disease, colitis, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).[1] As of August 2017, estimates revealed that approximately 3 million adults in the United States have IBD. However, that figure only considered people 18-years-old and up who have been diagnosed with Crohn\u2019s disease or ulcerative colitis.[2] This means the ~3 million IBD cases could, in reality, be far higher than we thought. Of all IBD cases, Crohn\u2019s disease is often in the spotlight, mostly because its cause is unknown. In a recent study, however, scientists believe they\u2019ve found a potential cure for Crohn\u2019s disease treatment.<\/p>\n<h2>A Brief Summary of Crohn\u2019s Disease Treatment, Symptoms, and More<\/h2>\n<p><em>What causes Crohn\u2019s disease?<\/em>\u00a0No one really knows. According to doctors, it could be an autoimmune disease. Crohn\u2019s research suggests that the disease is triggered by the immune system, wherein it attacks harmless bacteria or food in your gut causing an inflamed (and potentially damaged) bowel.[3] One thing is for sure, though \u2013 Crohn\u2019s does not only affect the bowels but joints, eyes, mouth and skin, no thanks to the chronic inflammatory activity of this IBD.<\/p>\n<p>In March 2016, Health Union conducted a life-altering national Crohn\u2019s patients survey which revealed:[4]<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c[It] was not uncommon for patients to see multiple healthcare professionals (HCPs), have numerous office visits, and endure multiple diagnostic tests before receiving a [Crohn\u2019s disease] diagnosis. Results demonstrate an impact on such things as the ability to work or exercise, but also on overall quality of life and social activities. Respondents wished more people understood the disease and its impact.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>Crohn\u2019s Disease Symptoms<\/h3>\n<p>The most common symptoms of Crohn\u2019s disease can include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Chronic diarrhea<\/li>\n<li>Rectal bleeding<\/li>\n<li>Weight loss<\/li>\n<li>Fever<\/li>\n<li>Fatigue<\/li>\n<li>Abdominal pain and tenderness<\/li>\n<li>Cramping and bloating<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Treating Crohn\u2019s Disease<\/h3>\n<p>Unfortunately, patients and professionals alike seem to be at a loss for treating Crohn\u2019s disease. The main reason finding an effective Crohn\u2019s disease treatment is so challenging is because IBDs can affect different parts of the gastrointestinal tract. This means, says Mayo Clinic gastroenterologist Edward V. Loftus, \u201cnot everyone has the same symptoms,\u201d[5] suggesting that IBD patients are on all sorts of medications to lower inflammation, strengthen bones and remove harmful intestinal bacteria, including:[8]<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Anti-inflammatory drugs for crohn\u2019s (corticosteroids and oral 5-aminosalicylates)<\/li>\n<li>Immune system suppressors (azathioprine, mercaptopurine, infliximab, methotrexate, and natalizumab)<\/li>\n<li>Antibiotics (ciprofloxacin and metronidazole)<\/li>\n<li>Other medications (anti-diarrheals, pain relievers, iron, vitamins D and B12, and calcium)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, a recent study\u00a0may point towards a treatment for Crohn\u2019s disease and other IBD patients!<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7uI34xrL5hI\" width=\"728\" height=\"410\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><em>Cannabis Induces a Clinical Response in Patients with Crohn\u2019s Disease: A Prospective Placebo-Controlled Study<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>In October 2013, researchers published a study in the journal\u00a0<em>Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology<\/em>\u00a0about the effects the marijuana plant\u00a0<em>Cannabis sativa<\/em>\u00a0had on patients\u2019 symptoms of Crohn\u2019s disease and other IBDs.[6] This paper was even the first of its kind to study the benefits of cannabis for IBD in a\u00a0<em>controlled<\/em>\u00a0setting.<\/p>\n<p>The study included 21 Crohn\u2019s disease patients (13 men and 8 women) at the average age of 40-years-old. Everyone involved in this study had previously tried treating their IBD with steroidal therapy, immunomodulators, or anti-tumor agents, but to no avail.<\/p>\n<p>Once researchers had split the patients randomly into two groups, the 10-week study began (8 weeks of treatment and a follow-up two weeks later). Eleven patients were given rolled cannabis to spoke containing 115mg of THC, two times per day. The remaining placebo patients were also given rolled cannabis to smoke, but without THC.<\/p>\n<h3>Cannabis for Crohn\u2019s Disease Treatment: The Findings<\/h3>\n<p>By the end of the study, researchers observed:[6]<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Complete remission in 5 of 11 subjects in the cannabis THC group<\/li>\n<li>Clinical responses in 10 of 11 subjects in the cannabis THC group\n<ul>\n<li>e.g., their Crohn\u2019s Disease Activity Index went from &gt;200 to &gt;100<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>3 of 11 subjects in the cannabis THC group were weaned from steroid dependency<\/li>\n<li>All subjects in the cannabis THC group reported having improved sleeps and appetites (with no significant side effects)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The biggest question researchers are posing is whether the effects of cannabis on symptoms of Crohn\u2019s disease and Crohn\u2019s flareups are simply masking the root cause, which still remains unknown. But the reason cannabis seems to be so effective for this disease is that Crohn\u2019s patients produce fewer endocannabinoids \u2013 i.e., your body\u2019s natural THC. So, by providing cannabinoids for the receptors your body\u00a0<em>does<\/em>\u00a0have, they basically help to dampen inflammation that can cause any combination of the symptoms of Crohn\u2019s disease listed above.[7]<\/p>\n<h3>Cannabis as a Viable Option for Crohn\u2019s Disease Treatment<\/h3>\n<p>Among the uses for cannabis is the treatment of Crohn\u2019s disease.
