href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/cannabis\">Legalised cannabis\u00a0<\/a>use may help solve America\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/opioid-crisis\">opioid crisis<\/a>, two scientific studies have suggested.<\/p>\n<p>Two separate peer-reviewed studies in the journal\u00a0<em>JAMA Internal Medicine\u00a0<\/em>found significant drops in opioid prescribing in US states that had relaxed their cannabis laws.<\/p>\n<p>Both studies appear to offer insights into possible ways to solve a crisis that saw\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/drugoverdose\/data\/overdose.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">17,087 people die<\/a>\u00a0from prescription opioid overdoes in the US in 2016.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline-block inline-block-related-single inline-block-left\" data-nid=\"\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/trump-opioid-crisis-latest-sue-lawsuit-drug-companies-deals-death-penalty-a8264211.html\">The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/trump-opioid-crisis-latest-sue-lawsuit-drug-companies-deals-death-penalty-a8264211.html\">\u00a0crisis<\/a>\u00a0has its origins in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/health\/opioid-back-pain-surgery-injections-doctors-treatment-useless-worldwide-study-lancet-a8267321.html\">\u00a0soaring prescription rates\u00a0<\/a>after a new generation of opioids were marketed in the 1980s and 1990s with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/05\/10\/business\/11drug-web.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">inaccurate claims<\/a>\u00a0that they could alleviate chronic pain with minimal risk of addiction.The new research was accompanied by an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamainternalmedicine\/fullarticle\/2676997\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">opinion piece<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<em>JAMA Internal Medicine<\/em>which said both studies produced \u201cresults suggesting that cannabis legalisation may play a beneficial role in the opioid crisis\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In the first study, researchers at the University of Georgia, Athens, looked at Medicare Part D prescriptions for people over the age of 65 between 2010 and 2015.<\/p>\n<p>It found that prescriptions for all opioids decreased by 2.11 million daily doses per year from an average of 23.08 million daily doses per year when a state instituted any medical cannabis law.<\/p>\n<p>When a state opened marijuana\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/marijuana-sales-overtake-alcohol-colorado-aspen-ski-resort-us-city-weed-cannabis-a8202966.html\">dispensaries,<\/a>opioid prescriptions dropped by 3.7 million daily doses per year.<\/p>\n<p>Summarising their results in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamainternalmedicine\/fullarticle\/2676999\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">article<\/a><em>Association Between US State Medical Cannabis Laws and Opioid Prescribing in the Medicare Part D Population<\/em>, the researchers said that part of the reason for embarking on their study was that \u201cMedical cannabis policies may be one mechanism that can encourage lower prescription opioid use and serve as a harm abatement tool in the opioid crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The researchers concluded: \u201cMedical cannabis laws are associated with significant reductions in opioid prescribing in the Medicare Part D population. This finding was particularly strong in states that permit dispensaries, and for reductions in hydrocodone and morphine prescriptions.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"dnd-widget-wrapper context-sdl_editor_representation type-gallery\">\n<div class=\"dnd-atom-rendered\">\n<div class=\"image\">\n<div class=\"container grid-mod-gallery\" data-scald-gallery=\"3441136\">The second study, detailed in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamainternalmedicine\/fullarticle\/2677000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">article<\/a>\u00a0<em>Association of Medical and Adult-Use Marijuana Laws With Opioid Prescribing for Medicaid Enrollees,\u00a0<\/em>looked at Medicaid prescription data from 2011 to 2016.It found that allowing medical marijuana use was associated with 5.88 per cent drops in opioid prescribing rates.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/marijuana-sales-overtake-alcohol-colorado-aspen-ski-resort-us-city-weed-cannabis-a8202966.html\">Allowing adult recreational use<\/a>\u00a0of cannabis was associated with greater reductions.\u00a0 Annual opioid prescribing rates fell by 6.38 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/student\/news\/university-of-kentucky-professor-launches-course-on-tacos-and-cultural-significance-of-mexican-food-a6853661.html\">University of Kentucky\u00a0<\/a>researchers concluded: \u201cThe potential of marijuana liberalisation to reduce the use and consequences of prescription opioids among Medicaid enrollees deserves consideration during the policy discussions about marijuana reform and the opioid epidemic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The opinion\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamainternalmedicine\/fullarticle\/2676997\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">article,<\/a>\u00a0<em>The Role of Cannabis Legalization in the Opioid Crisis<\/em>, said that both studies \u201csupport anecdotal evidence from patients who describe a decreased need for opioids to treat chronic pain after initiation of medical cannabis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The same article, however, cautioned that the correlations between cannabis legalisation and falling opioid prescription rates did not necessarily equal causation.<\/p>\n<p>It said the two studies did not include controls for \u201ca multitude of other factors that may affect the association between medical cannabis and opioids in a given state and that are known to be associated with regional variation in opioid prescribing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Such factors included \u201cracial composition, educational attainment, prevalence of disease, disability, and suicide rates\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The comment article added that what happens with Medicare Part D and Medicaid patients may not apply to the US population as a whole.<\/p>\n<p>The opinion piece said: \u201cConclusions drawn from Medicare Part D or Medicaid data, which include primarily disabled individuals, individuals 65 years or older, and others with low income levels, such as families, children, or pregnant women, may not be generalizable to other demographic groups.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever,\u201d the article added, \u201cThe research does seem to point in the direction of marijuana having some sort of positive benefit with regards to lessening opioid prescriptions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The two studies, which looked at legalised cannabis and legalised opioid use, contrasted with some\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28946762\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">previous research<\/a>\u00a0which has found an association between illegal cannabis use and increased illicit recreational abuse of prescription opioids.<\/p>\n<p>Attempting to explain the differences, the\u00a0<em>JAMA Internal Medicine<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamainternalmedicine\/fullarticle\/2676997\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">c<\/a>omment article stated: \u201cThe association between illicit cannabis use and opioid use may be different than the association of legalised cannabis use and opioids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It added: \u201cFor many reasons, ranging from significant barriers to research on cannabis and cannabinoids to impatience, cannabis policy has raced ahead of cannabis science in the US.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany companies and states (via taxes) are profiting from the cannabis industry while failing to support research at the level necessary to advance the science.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis situation has to change to get definitive answers on the possible role for cannabis in the opioid crisis, as well as the other potential harms and benefits of legalising cannabis.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Retrieved from:
