The crowning achievement of my life was to kill 3000 of my country’s enemy in the Vietnam War as a bombardier in the B-52 Stratofortress. That was the achievement for which my birth and all my life’s accumulation of energy. discipline and education was intended.

My goals for a satisfying completion of your VA psychotherapy program are:

To understand in my heart why I had to do all that killing.

To understand in my brain why I had to go into such a terrible shocking emotional turmoil for so many years after I did the killing.

To know if God still loves me after I did all that killing

To know if any American citizens still love me after I did all that killing for them.

I welcome this opportunity to openly and frankly communicate with you because I am sure that you know that a patient who does not have time to communicate fully with his psychiatrist does not have time to help himself to recover.

And I am certainly sure that you know that a psychiatrist who does not have time to communicate fully with his patient does not have time to be an effective psychiatrist hence driving up even more the suicide rate.
