Army Sergeant Matthew C Moran, born November of 1986, in Cherry Point, North Carolina, beloved son to Elizabeth (Padget) Moran Tamburri and the late Thomas Moran. Matthew graduated from Pine-Richland High School in 2005. At age 17, as a high school junior, Matthew joined the Army and quickly rose to the rank of Sergeant.
Matthew was proud to be a member of the Polar Bear’s Rapid Deployment Unit with the 10th Mountain Division. Matthew served with honor during two tours of duty in Iraq. During his distinguished service to his country, Matthew earned several awards including two Overseas Service Ribbons, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Nation Defense Service Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Iraqi Campaign Service Medal (with three campaign stars), Army Good Conduct Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Combat Infantryman’s Badge and Superior Unit Award.
Though Matthew’s life was cut short, he left a legacy of love, courage and kindness behind. Matthew and his mother, Beth, were the best of friends. Even as an adult, Matthew would call her “Mummy” which always brought a smile to his mother’s face. He was a role model, friend and hero to his brothers, Bryce and Zachary. Matthew never met a stranger; everyone quickly became his friend. He loved hockey and was a fanatic Pittsburgh Penguins supporter. Whenever Matthew was home on leave, you could always find him at a hockey game.
SGT Matthew C Moran lost his battle with PTSD, April 24, 2014 in Las Cruces, New Mexico. He was 23 years old.
