Jonathan J Schulze, 25

US Marine Pvt Jonathan J Schulze, born November of 1981, in Prior Lake, Minnesota. Beloved son of Eileen Carlson and James Schulze; beloved brother of Sarah, Travis, Jennifer and Joshua; beloved father of Kaley Marie.

Pvt Schulze, a Machine Gunner, received two Purple Hearts after being wounded in combat during the Iraqi Campaign. Schulze had a harrowing time in Iraq, spending time in heated battles of Ramadi in April 2004. While he was there, 35 Marines in his unit were killed, including 17 of them in just 48 hours of combat.

When Schulze left the Marine Corps, he participated in military color guards, visited aging veterans in state homes and helped anyone in need. He was a member of Prior Lake VFW and worked construction with his father. Schulze bragged of adoration for his young daughter, Kaley Marie.

Pvt Schulze reached out to the VA for help. His parents say the VA told Jonathan they couldn’t admit him that day and asked if he would call back the next day. He did but was told he was number 26 on a waiting-list and the VA didn’t have enough beds for him. Four days later, Pvt Schulze took his own life.

He died of wounds received during his seven-month tour of duty in Iraq, wounds different from the ones that earned him two purple hearts. This young Marine died of wounds to the soul and not the flesh.

Pvt Jonathan J Schulze lost his battle with PTSD, January 16, 2007. He was 25 years old.
