“We lost another warrior last night. Retired U.S. Army Sergeant First Class Andrew McCaffrey did what he said he would never do, he took his own life. Andy was the most intense soldier I ever met. He was a warrior’s warrior. His hand was blown off by a defective grenade. He fought the Army to stay on active duty with an intensity that was awe-inspiring. And against all odds, he beat them and went on to serve 2 more tours downrange as an active special forces operator. Details aside his return to the non-combat Army was less than fully successful and he ended up retiring before he wanted to. I don’t think he knew how to ratchet down that intensity level and the Army and the VA didn’t have the tools to help him with that. I found 2 photos of him that I believe capture the man that I knew. He is one of the “22”. He poured every ounce of his being into being the best warrior he could be and at that, he succeeded. I hope you are finally at peace, Andy.”
