New York Police Department Sergeant Linhong Lee served his department for seven years.

Queens, NY – New York Police Department (NYPD) Sergeant Linhong Li died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his home on Tuesday.

The 33-year-old sergeant’s wife found him suffering from a gunshot wound inside their Fresh Meadows residence at approximately 9:30 p.m., the New York Daily News reported.

“Out of nowhere, maybe 30 cops stopped by,” the couple’s neighbor, Fabio Acquista, told the New York Post. “Then I just heard them shouting, ‘Bring him to the bus!’ The ambulance was just pulling up and they brought him inside [it].”

Acquista estimated that first responders tried to resuscitate the sergeant for 15 or 20 minutes.

“You could see them pumping his chest,” the neighbor recalled. “I saw the wife. She was screaming at the door.”

Sgt. Li was rushed to Jamaica Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the New York Daily News reported.

He was the 10th NYPD officer to die by suicide this year.

“Tragically, we have lost another NYPD member to suicide,” New York Police Commissioner James O’Neill tweeted on Wednesday. “We’re taking great steps to end this mental-health crisis, and we vow to always keep fighting. Please take care of yourselves and regularly check up on your colleagues and loved ones. #StopSuicide.”

According to police sources, Sgt. Li had been in contact with the department’s Early Intervention Unit sometime prior to his death, the New York Post reported.

Sgt. Li, a U.S. Marine who served in Iraq, graduated at the very top of his NYPD academy class, Newsday reported.

The seven-year veteran-of-the-force was assigned to the NYPD’s 24th Precinct in upper Manhattan at the time of his death, according to the New York Post.

“Officer Li will be remembered as a dedicated public servant and his passing is a great loss for the Borough of Queens and New York City, New York Assemblyman David Weprin said in a statement. “Our police officers face multiple stresses and traumas on the job each day while protecting us and I urge our officers to seek assistance when necessary and take advantage of the NYPD’s mental health services.”

“My heartfelt condolences go out to his wife and family at this difficult time,” Weprin said.

Sgt. Li will be laid to rest on Oct. 24, according to the Sergeants Benevolent Association.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of New York Police Department Sergeant Linhong Li, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.
